Only Lukashenka will enter Europe for free, not Belarusian citizens

17

The European Union still does not plan to start talks with the Belarusian side concerning reduction of cost of Schengen visas for Belarusian citizens.

It has been said by the press service of the supreme EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana.

“The European Union is still in the beginning of its new relations with Belarus, and development of these relations would depend on actions of the Belarusian authorities in the sphere of human rights. It is early to speak about the new relations in detail.

Visas are an important problem in the dialogue with Brussels. But today there are no plans to start talks on reduction of costs for visas. Separate countries-members of the European Union, which belong to Schengen visas have a relative freedom of actions as concerning the issue of the visas, and it is important for them to see what can they do at that level,” the press-service informs.

As the Charter’97 press-centre informed, on October 13 the council of the European Union adopted a decision to suspend sanctions against Alyaksandr Lukashenka and his officials for half a year. The head of the central Election Committee Lidziya Yarmoshyna who is responsible for rigging election results, and four high-ranking officials who are suspected by the international community to be involved in abductions and assassination of leaders of the Belarusian opposition remain on the black list. European politicians hope that in response to lifting sanctions the Belarusian regime will start democratisation in the country.
