Belarusians cannot open foreign websites

Belarus has the gateway in the European direction that is 10 times narrower than Russia has.

As the website Electroname.com, Belarusian Internet users have difficulties getting access to foreign sites. The problem is that Belarus’s Internet gateway in the direction of Europe is 10 times narrower than Russia has.

Beltelecom’s connection speed with long-distance operators Rostelecom and Transtelecom amounts to 20Gbit/s, while that with TATA Communication in the western direction is only 2Gbit/s. As a result, the western gateway is overloaded, so a part of requests are routed through the Russian operators that worsens connection quality and causes packet losses.

General director of Beltelecom Kanstantsin Tikar said in November the country’s gateway in western direction would be extended by Gbit/s by the end of 2009, but failed to fulfil his promise.

We remind that the site charter97.org is hosted on an American server, so Internet users from Belarus can face troubles accessing to the resource.
