Strengthened security measures for Lukashenka at Sochi resort

The Belarusian dictator skies in a company of 15 security guards, eyewitnesses say.

As «Salidarnasts» newspaper writes, Alyaksandr Lukashenka gets acquainted with new skiing facilities in Sochi.

“The weather in Sochi is excellent and favourable for skiing now. The temperature in the mountains is -10. Alyaksandr Lukashenka was skiing on Monday and Tuesday, he studied new skiing facilities, asked where skiing was the best,” “KP-Krasnodar” newspaper was told by staff of the resort.

The head of Belarus, who stayed at sporting and recreational center “Belarus” in Krasnaya Polyana, has recently tried a new ski resort Laura, built by Gazprom. It is the place where Russian top officials prefer to ski for the last three years.

As reported by Lukashenka’s press service, his short vacation started on February 7. The head of state and his son Nikolai were noticed at ski pistes on the weekend.

Valentina Simionel shared her impressions of Lukashenka’s vacation with yugopolis.ru website: “I skied on the same slope with Lukashenka yesterday, February 8 (Gornaya Karusel lift owned by administration of Krasnodar Krai). A day before, Lukashenka was skiing on Roza Hutor (owned by Potanin). We planned to ski there, but there were competitions, and ordinary people were not allowed there. Yesterday, everyone was carefully checked at the lift. We asked why and were told reason was security of Lukashenka. I didn’t meet him, because the run is 3 kilometres, but it is said he was skiing downhill in a company of 15 people, who formed a triangle around him. They often stopped and asked people not to come too close.

Yuri and I were in the same lift cabin with a man from his retinue. He asked if they disturbed us too much and we said they didn’t. We talked about the best pistes and those the president liked most of all. He praised Roza Hutor and added he also admired Gornaya Karusel. He was a pleasant man. When he left the cabin, he walked to Vershina restaurant (a new restaurant at the top of this lift), where Lukashenka and his retinue were having lunch…”

The news with details regarding Lukashenka’s vacation evokes resent on the Internet amid reports on increasing sugar prices and communal services costs. These holidays of the state of head provoked only astonishment, to put it mildly. Blogger nu_da writes: “Belarus’s gold and foreign currency reserves dropped by 500 million dollars. Can the president of the low-income country choose a more modest resort?”
