Lithuanian minister offers to convene State Defence Council because of Belarus’ NPP

Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania, offers to convene the State Defence Council and to express the official position in connection with the nuclear power plant which is to be constructed in Belarus.

“Lithuania needs a clear plan how to behave in the situation when Belarus builds a nuclear power plant near Vilnius,” Masiulis is convinced.

As said by him, as long as the plans of Belarus to construct a nuclear power plant near Vilnius are starting to take shape, a clear strategy of further actions with the aim to defend state interests is needed, DELFI reports.

“The leader of the state should call the State Defence Council, to express a clear, determined position in view of the future of nuclear power industry in our region,” Masiulis said.

As said by him, comments of nature protection experts and experts in the sphere of power industry, as well as notes sent to Belarus, had little effect.

“Lithuania should probable coordinate its actions with other countries of the EU, so that the plans to construct a NPP near Vilnius would be discussed at the summit level,” Masiulis said.
