Azubalis calls Belarusian NPP construction site a “provocation”

On April 8, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis called Belarus’s decision on constructing a nuclear power plant 50 km from Vilnius a provocation.

“There’s package of measures Lithuania can apply to make the situation transparent, to remove the construction site of the NPP from the Lithuanian border. The decision of Belarus cannot be called other than a provocation,” Azubalis said on April 8 answering a question if Belarus had replied to Lithuania’s note, Delfi reports.

Belarusian Foreign Minister Syarhei Martynau promised in late March that Minsk would give its reply to Lithuania’s note regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment of the NPP Belarus plans to construct.

“I cannot say (what we will do if there is no reply to the note – BNS), we are just doing our routine work, the thing we must do. We are trying to convince, trying to get information, trying to talk to international partners and discuss the situation on an international scale. In my opinion, one of the main aims is give Europe and the world a clear and unambiguous view of what’s going in the region,” Azubalis said.

Lithuania has handed in a note of protest not only to Belarus, but also to Russia, which plans to construct a nuclear power plant in the Kaliningrad region close to the Lithuanian border.

“We are not satisfied with the information on the new NPP we have received from Russian. It doesn’t satisfy our consultants and experts. The environmental impact assessment should not be just a general overview, as it is now, but must contain facts, figures, and arguments. But there are no such things,” Azubalis said.

“Moreover, it lacks such important issues as criteria for choosing a site, explaining why it is decided to construct a plant exactly, which is a clear violation of the IAEA rules, and many other things. We remind our neighbours again: Dear sirs, you have the right to construct a nuclear power plant and develop energy industry, but keep to the international rules, you are obliged to fulfill,” the Lithuanian Foreign Minister said.
