Prison staff refuse to pass hat for Dashkevich

Political prisoner Zmitser Dashkevich wrote about his life in a solitary confinement cell in the Hrodna prison.

Anastasia Palazhanka, the fiancée of Young Front leader Zmitser Dashkevich, received several letters from him. The political prisoner writes about solitary confinement and says he has not health problems, Radio Svaboda reports.

“His confinement conditions don't differ from those he had in the cell-type facility in Horki or in the punishment cell in Hlybokaye. The daily routine is the same. He received a parcel of clothes from me. I hope it will help him in winter: a sweater, underwear, laundry powder to wash his clothes, soap and tooth paste. My only disappointment was that the prison staff refused to accept a winter hat, because it contained natural fur. They said they would have accepted it if it had been fake fur. Later Zmitser explained to his lawyer that a natural fur hat is considered to be a valuable thing that can be stolen by inmates, while a  faux fur hat has no value. Zmitser has a hat, but it is small. He was promised to be given a normal one.”

In 2011, Zmitser Dashkeveich was sentenced to 2 years in a penal colony for hooliganism a day before the 2010 presidential elections. His sentence was expected to expire on December 18, 2012, but the political prisoner was tried again in August. His term was extended by one year for failure to fulfil prison rules. He was sent to a maximum security prison.
