Human rights activist Aleh Vouchak was detained by people in mufti near Bangalore Square in Minsk.
Radio Racja received this information from a member of the Masty district council, Dzmitry Kukhlei.
He was taken to the Tsentralny district police department:
“We were walking and talking. Three men in mufti approached us. One of them showed a police ID card. They said he should go to the Tsentralny district police department. He got in their minibus and they left. They did not explain anything, only said it was an order. Aleh asked why, but they answered they would explain everything in the department. I asked when he would be released and they said it wouldn't take much time. I don't know what to expect. They guarded him to the Tsentralny district police department.”
Aleh Vouchak was in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan war. He later worked in a prosecutor's office.
After he had left the prosecution agency, he worked with high-profile cases relating to political prisoners and arrested law enforcement officers.
He actively helped Alyaksandr Kazulin and then Mikalai Autukhovich, who also served in Afghanistan.
Vouchak's activity provoked nervous reaction of pro-Lukashenka media. His organization “Legal Assistance to Citizens” lost registration in 2003. The case over liquidation of “Legal Assistance to Citizens” is under consideration by the UN Human Rights Committee.
