Incidence of cancer increased by 35%

Only in 2011, more than 44 thousand people fell ill with cancer.

In Belarus, the incidence of cancer rose by 35% per 100 thousand people in 2002. Early in 2012, there were about 250 thousand people with malignancy (more than 2.5% of the population) in the follow-up care, while ten years earlier, there were only 155 thousand people, said Oleg Sukunko, the director of the Republican Scientific Practical Center of Oncology and Medical Radiology named after Alexandrov.

Only in 2011, more than 44 thousand people fell ill with cancer. Given the current growth rates, according to Oleg Sukunko, "the illness will affect 78 thousand people per year in a 20-years’ time. It will significantly increase the burden on the country's health system," BelaPAN.

However, the expert notes that there is a growing gap between the levels of morbidity and mortality. He points out that the death rate has decreased by 5.6% since 2002.

In the structure of all-cause death, cancer pathology ranks the 2nd following the cardiovascular disease. Men often die from cancer of lung, colon, stomach, while women - from gynecological tumors. The expert also says that the incidence of cancer is rising dramatically with age. Despite that almost one in three of working age is already sick.

Risk factors for cancer include poor diet, smoking, adverse environmental factors, untreated inflammatory diseases and an unhealthy lifestyle in general. At the same time success in reducing the mortality rate is mainly influenced by prevention, early diagnosis and improving treatment of cancer patients, said he.
