Imprisoned Statkevich to run in “election”

Initiative groups to nominate political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich a candidate are registered in the Vitebsk region.
Viasna human rights centre reports that Statkevich's groups will be registered in all 14 constituencies of the region. Documents were filed to most commissions, Alyaksei Haurutikau, a member of Statkevuch's party (Belarusian Social Democratic Party Narodnaya Hramada), says. According to him, the initiative group has more than 100 members. All commissions do not refuse to accept registration documents.
Members of Statkevich's party say the main goal of the campaign is to draw attention to the problem of political prisoners in the country. We remind Statkevich has been in prison since December 2010. The political prisoner repeatedly called the opposition to run in the elections.
