Zmitser Dashkevich'a father has stage II cancer

Vyachaslau Dashkevich has seen his son only once for 18 months – it was a 40-minute meeting through a glass barrier.

Vyachaslau Dashkevich was refusing to tell about his disease. He did not want this information to go public. He says he occasionally told it to Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, Nasha Niva newspaper reports.

“I did a stupid thing. I told it to Nyaklyaeu in the US embassy. No one knew that before,” the father of the political prisoner says. “I am going to hospital for a medical examination and treatment. They say it will take four or five days. Then a two-week break and the same period in hospital. I will have three stays in  hospital.”

Vyachaslau Dashkevich does not understand why doctors waited for six months to start treatment after the disease was discovered. “My daughter from my first marriage lives in Lithuania. She asked when I knew about the disease. I said it was in March. She wonders: 'They haven't done anything for six months! In Lithuania, they began treatment immediately.' But I was told here this disease develops slowly.”

The father of the political did not mention his diagnose directly. He says “the oncologist said”, “stage II”, “a treatment course in Baraulyany hospital” [the oncology centre]. First suspicions appeared three years ago.

Vyachaslau Dashkevich chose not to have a medical examination, because he didn't have money onto pay for analyses.

“Our district oncologist sent me to Slutsk three years ago to undergo an analysis. But I did not have spare money. This year, I needed a doctor's certificate to go to a health centre. The same doctor sent me to Slutsk for examination again. I undergo analyses and a blood test showed that a level of certain element is 1.5-fold above the norm. I was sent to Baraulyany. They confirmed the diagnosis. I was in March. I don't feel anything, but I was told if I begin to feel something, it will be too late,” he says.

We remind a new criminal case was initiated against Zmitser Dashkevich for alleged violations of prison rules. The Young Front leader already read the materials of the case. He is now waiting for trial that can extend his prison term.

“I don't expect anything good. My son hates compromises. We even argued over this. He cannot be bent. He can be broken, but not bent.

He will be in prison as long as Lukashenka stays in power. It's a difficult topic for me. I had only a short meeting with him in the last two years,” Vyachaslau Dashkevich says.

Zmitser Dashkevich knows about his father's disease and supports him in letters.

We remind the mother of the Young Front leader, Volha Dashkevich, was unable to survive another prison term for her son – she died in April 2011.

On December 18, 2010, a day before the presidential elections, Zmitser Dashkevich and Young Front member Eduard Lobau were detained in Minsk and accused of beating two men, on March 24, 2011, Dashkevich was sentenced to two years in a minimum security penal colony.

A new criminal case over part 1 of article 411 of the Criminal Code (failure to perform orders of detention facility authorities) was initiated against Dashkevich. He may face up to one year in prison. Dashkevich's term expires in five months.
