Füle invites dictatorship for a «dialogue on modernisation»

The EU calls on the Belarusian authorities to increase their participation in the dialogue on the modernisation, in which the European institutions are actively with civil society in Belarus.

On 20 February in Brussels, the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met with eight representatives of Belarusian civil society, the coordinators of the European Dialogue on Modernisation with Belarusian society. The priorities for modernisation in Belarus and how these could be achieved were the main topics of the meeting as well as the conditions for the work of NGOs  more generally.

The Commissioner took careful note of the proposals which inter alia cover issues of judicial, social and economic reforms. Commissioner Füle stressed the importance of support to civil society in Belarus as a matter of priority for the EU. "The Dialogue on Modernisation is a very good example showing that civil society is ready to make an important contribution to the country's modernisation. I hope that Belarusian authorities will notice this readiness and will consider their own input into this Dialogue. I consider it as an important tool for the preparation of necessary reforms and modernisation plans of the country."
