BRSM gets no funds from EU

The European Commission promises not to support the pro-Lukashenka youth organisation.

British MEP Marina Yannakoudakis asked an official question to the Commission to ensure that no funds would go to the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM).

As charter97.org learnt, she said that the BRSM was used by the Belarusian dictator to promote his cult of personality and asked if the organisation could receive grants from the EU.

The funds of the EU Commission would “support transnational cooperation projects involving partners from the EU and partners from neighbouring countries, but not operating grants to structures such as BRSM”,  Commissioner Vassiliou said in her answer.

The MEP promised to monitor the grant process to ensure that the BRSM is not involved in any Youth in Action projects.

It should be reminded that the BRSM leaders earlier said about cooperation with the Council of Europe and the European Youth Forum and announced their intention to get grants from the EU.
