8 Belarusian officials crossed off EU black list

On July 8 the Council of the European Union stroke 8 names from the list of Belarusian officials to whom sanctions are applied, the press-service of the Council of the EU informs. However, one name has been added to the list.

In light of the ongoing serious concerns in the sphere of human rights, one individual has been added to the list of sanctions. At the same time had the Council believes that there are no grounds for 8 persons to stay on thus list, the report reads.

It is not reported whose name has been crossed off the list, and who has been added to the list.

We remind that the EU updated the list in the end of 2013. Then sanctions against 13 persons were lifted, and two governors of Babrusjk penal colony, where Ales Bialiatski, a human rights activist served the sentence, were included in the list.

Summing up the results of its annual review, the Council of the EU extended restrictive measures against Belarus until October 31, 2014. The updated list includes 232 names and 25 legal entities, who are banned from travelling in the EU and whose European assets are frozen.

At the same time, this year the head of the Belarusian Foreign Affairs Ministry Uladzimir Makei (Vladimir Makei) in one of his interviews stated that 243 individuals and 32 economic entities are blacklisted by Europeans.
