BSDP (NH) proposes Statkevich as presidential candidate

The organising committee of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada) has proposed its leader Mikalai Statkevich as a candidate for the presidency.

Belorusski Partizan learnt it from the party's secretary general Siarhei Skrabets.

The party's executive bureau discussed the further development of the party after the expulsion from the “democratic seven” (BPF, UCP, Left Party Fair World, BCD, BSDP (Hramada), Tell the Truth and For Freedom movement). The group of seven has been trying since spring to agree on a procedure of proposing a common democratic candidate for the presidency.

“We were invited to meetings a couple of times. Kaliakin and Vershtard then spoke against our participation in the meetings. Kaliakin rudely expelled our representative, the first deputy head of the party Arestovich, from a meeting,” Siarhei Skrabets noted.

The initiative to propose Statkevich as the common candidate was made by Tell the Truth leader Uladzimir Niakliaeu and BCD co-head Pavel Seviarynets, but the “seven” and later foreign sponsors declined the initiative.

Statkevich already agreed to run in the presidential campaign in 2015.

Narodnaya Hramada decided to nominate Mikalai Statkevich independently and register an initiative group to collect signatures. As the “group of seven” did not support the nomination of Mikalai Statkevich, Narodnaya Hramada seeks the support of the European Coalition.

“There is an opinion that access to Europe is closed for Belarus due to the war in Ukraine. But we still have a chance to join the united Europe despite the Ukrainian war. Mikalai Statkevich will represent the aspirations of those who would like to see Belarus in Europe,” Siarhei Skrabets said.

Narodnaya Hramada does not lose a hope to see Mikalai Statkevich as the common candidate of opposition. Siarhei Skrabets plans to nominate Statkevich if the Congress of Democratic Forces is held to elect the common candidate.
