Lukashenka to writers: Why didn't “War and Peace” appear in Belarus for last 20 years?

The dictator expresses his discontent with writers.

He said it on October 23 at a meeting with creative intellectuals, BelTA reports.

“Why haven't new 'War and Peace' or 'Virgin Soil Upturned' appeared in the last 20 or 30 years? Is the reason the lack of talents? Or is this due to the objective life conditions when a book stops being the main source of information?” he asked.

Lukashenka thinks the changes in the readers' mind should not be explained exclusively by the technological revolution. He thinks the intense pace of living provoked a pragmatic approach to literature.

“Contemporary readers choose books with absorbing plots and heroes and books that can cure boredom. Serious literature tends to be meant for intellectuals,” he noted. “Scientists say a state's economic, political and military advantages don't come out of nothing. They are a part and result of the state's spirituality and culture. The development of society and the nation's existence are possible on if they are based on the eternal trine: science, education and culture.”
