Stanislau Shushkevich thanks anonymous helper

The first head of state of independent Belarus told an unusual story that has been continuing for more than a year.

Stanislau Shushkevich called charter97.org to thank an anonymous helper who helps him with paying his mobile phone bills.

“An anonymous person decided he or she can help me,” he said. “He has been topping up my phone with a six-digit sum in Belarusian rubles every month or more often for almost a year. I practically don't spend my money on phone conversations. It is very pleasant for me, but unfortunately, I don't know the name of that person. So, I haven't thanked him yet. I'd like to use your website to thank him for his help.”

Stanislau Shushkevich's official pension is 3,200 Belarusian rubles (30 cents). In 1997, Lukashenka cancelled the resolution of the parliament that granted a life pension to the former PM and head of state at a size of 70-75% the salary of then PM and speaker and signed a decree on the regulation of pensions for merits to the people of Belarus. The decree left pensions for five former heads of state of Belarus, including Stanislau Shushkevich, at the level of 1997.
