Two Russian activists to be deported from Belarus

After serving 3-days administrative arrest in Minsk, Andrei Fedorkov and Ivan Solovyov should be expelled from Belarus.

Two Russians and one Belarusian, whose name is not revealed, were detained on October 25 at a bus stop in Partyzanski Avenue in Minsk, allegedly for using foul speech and insubordination to demands of policemen. The detainees were taken to Zavadski police department, and reports of administrative violations were drawn up against them, “Viasna” human rights centre informs.

On October 27 the court of Zavadski district of Minsk found them guilty of petty hooliganism and insubordination to demands of policemen. The Belarusian citizen was sentenced to 10 days’ arrest, and Russian citizens to 3 days.

According to the knowledge of human rights activists, the Russians are to be deported from Belarus today.

As BelaPAN was told by the advisor of the Russian Embassy in Belarus Igor Karyagin, the consulate had not received an official notification about detention of the Russian citizens. As said by him, the consulate knows about their detention thanks to the words of a friend of one of the detained Russians, who on October 28 called the diplomats from St. Petersburg. Karyagin noted that one of the detainees used his right for a call, but instead of the consulate he phoned his friend. “However, we always warn, and it is written at our website, that it is consulate which is to be phoned to in such cases, and not friends, so that a consul could react and render assistance immediately,” Karyagin said.

He noted that according to the existing diplomatic practice, the Embassy should have been informed about the detention of the Russian citizens by the Interior Affairs Ministry of Belarus through the Foreign Ministry within 3 days. “We have not received anything so far. We called the Foreign Ministry and asked whether they had information about the detention, but they had not received anything,” Karyagin said. “It is most likely that we will receive notification about deportation already.”
