Human rights defender Tonkacheva to be deported from Belarus

A decision to deport Elena Tonkacheva from Belarus may be taken.

The head of the Legal Transformation Centre Lawtrend received a notice on October 30 saying that her residence permit would be annulled. The human rights defender is going to appeal against the annulment of the residence permit and focus on settling the problem of a possible deportation, Eurobelarus reports.

It became known in September that Russian citizen Elena Tonkavheva, who has been living in Belarus since 1985, may lose her residence permit.

The human rights defender will not evaluate or comment on the actions by the authorities until the communication process is completed and final decisions are taken.

The ground for the annulment was that a speed camera caught her slightly exceeding the speed limit.
