Zmitser Bandarenka: Valery Fralou is blessed general

Valery Fralou's biggest achievement was his heroic acts as a peacemaker during the coup attempt in August 1991.

Zmitser Bandarenka, a coordinator of the European Belarus civil campaign, said it to charter97.org.

“I am proud to be a friend of Valery Fralou. His death is a grievous loss. He was a bright figure in the Belarusian policy, an extraordinary person with a love for life and an internal justice compass. Despite his facade of masculinity Fralou was a surprisingly kind and, I would say, naïve. I didn't understand how these features – extreme masculinity and a kind of naïvety – can exist in one person, in a general.

Perhaps, the main achievement of Valery Fralou was his actions or maybe lack of actions during the coup attempt in August 1991, when he, the commander of the Vilnius garrison received an order to bring tanks and equipment to the city. Valery Fralou knew what happened in Vilnius last winter, so he ordered to take the equipment out of storage facilities, but brought them to a reserve district. Soviet tanks didn't enter Vilnius. The coup was stopped, and Fralou remained a national hero of Lithuania, because he prevented bloodshed. He became a peacemaker. As the New Testament says, blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God. Valery Fralou is a blessed Belarusian general in the highest Christian sense of the word. Rest in peace,” Zmitser Bandarenka said.
