Freelance journalist called to police station

The journalist will receive a summons to a court for her cooperation with Radio Racyja.

Freelance journalist Tamara Shchapetkina from the town of Biaroza (Brest region) has been invited a police department. Police officers told her on the phone that she should receive a court summons for her alleged cooperation with Belarusian Radio Racyja, which is considered to be a foreign media outlet without the accreditation of the Belarusian MFA.

“A deputy head of the public order department told me on the phone that I needed to visit the police station at 17:00. The reason is that I work for Radio Racyja. I said I was busy and they warned me too late. I said I could come the next day. He answered I could visit them in the morning to get my summons. I said I wanted to receive an official summons if there were any criminal laws that I violated. He agreed.”

Tamara Shchapetkina thinks her phone is tapped by the KGB. She also thinks the KGB stands behinds the persecution. She noticed several people in plainclothes who were following her and asking people how she introduced herself and what she wanted to talk about. In 2011, the prosecutor''s office of the Biaroza district issued an official warning to Tamara Shchapetrkina for cooperating with foreign mass media without accreditation.
