Uladzimir Kobets: Lukashenka was shown in 2010 that he worth nothing

The dictator couldn't have won the elections in 2010.

Four years have passed since the dramatic post-election protests of 2010. Thousands of Belarusians felt free and expressed their protests against the rigged results of the presidential elections on the evening of December 19. The later events – the bloody suppression of the rally, arrests and persecution of thousands of people across the country – were a shock. The event went down in history of Belarus. But what changes did it bring to our life?

The campaign during the latest presidential elections was among the most liberal ones during the rule of Lukashenka. Opposition candidates used an opportunity to appear on state-run TV channels and called on Belarusians to come to Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk in the evening to support their choice and protest against electoral frauds.

Uladzimir Kobets said in the programme Hot Comment on Belsat TV that Aliaksandr Lukashenka had lost the elections in Minsk in 2010 and demonstrated a voting results reports. “Andrei Sannikov and Uladzimir Niakliaeu had more than 50% together in Minsk, so Lukashenka couldn't have won,” Kobets stressed.

“The question was whether Lukashenka would keep his power or not. We knew for sure that people felt free due to the liberalisation that lasted a month or two before the elections. That gulp of freedom showed Lukashenka what he is worth. He is worth nothing,” Uladzimir Kobets, a coordinator of the European Belarus civil campaign, said.
