EU leaders approve Juncker as European Commission head

Jean-Claude Juncker is to head the European Commission.

It has been informed by Herman Van Rompuy, the current president of the European Council, Reuters reports.

On June 10 Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, voiced support to the nomination of the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean-Claude Juncker as the next President of the European Commission. As mass media state, the British Prime Minister David Cameron opposed his nomination.

We remind that the European People’ Party, the centre-right political party, which proposed Juncker for the position of the European Commission head, won the majority of seats in the European Parliament in the election in May.

Juncker is known for his work as the leader of the European group – the union of Finance Ministers of the Eurozone, who had to adopt tough decisions on assistance to the countries fallen in recession. It is believed that Juncker would not agree to reconsideration of the relations between the Great Britain and the EU, which is actively discussed in London, especially after the success of Eurosceptics in the election.
