Putin proposed Poroshenko to legitimise territories captured by militants

The Russian president proposed Ukraine the “Abkhazian scenario” as a peaceful plan.

The statement was by US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Samantha Power at a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, UNIAN reports.

Samantha Power said president Putin proposed Poroshenko to discuss a “plan that would free Russia from the commitment it made in Minsk”.

According to her, the Russian plan proposes the legitimisation of territorial gains achieved by separatists since September and the presence of Russian servicemen and military equipment in Ukraine.

Power recalled that similar peace plans were implemented in Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transnistria. The US Representative added that when president Poroshenko rejected Putin's proposal, Russia accused Ukraine of being not interested in a peaceful solution. “Let us pull the veil away from Putin's peace plan and call it for what it is - a Russian occupation plan,” Power said.

She emphasised that if Russia took peace seriously, it should comply with the Minsk Agreements and withdraw its equipment and personnel, free all prisoners, including pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, stop backing separatists and return control over the international border to Ukraine.
