Belarusians of Warsaw demand the release of activists detained in Minsk

1

A picket was held near the embassies of Belarus and Ukraine in Poland.

Picketers demanded that the Belarusian authorities immediately release the people who were arrested for paying tribute to the memory of the “Heavenly Hundred” and punish the police officers who insulted the detainees and the state symbols of Ukraine, Radio Racyja reports.

“The Belarusian embassy shows nothing new. They ignored our demand to hand in the petition. No one came to us, no one opened the door. We see another reaction at the embassy of Ukraine. A staff member, who understood our indignation, came to us and talked to us politely. We called on the Ukrainian authorities to influence the Belarusian authorities so that they release the picketers,” a participant of the picket says.

Vasyl Zvarych, ad advisor to Ukraine's ambassador to Poland, took the appeal from the picketers and thanked all Belarusians for supporting Ukraine.

Opposition activists Ales Makayeu, Yauhen Batura, Maksim Viniarski, Mikalai Kolas and Volha Mikalaichyk were sentenced to from 5 to 15 days in custody for laying flowers to Taras Shevchenko monument in Minsk on January 23.
