EP President warns Greece against boycotting sanctions against Russia

Martin Schulz, the President of the European Parliament, criticised the new government of Greece for diverging from the EU's stance on Russia.

The politician says he doesn't think the new ruling coalition in Athens is good for the country, Deutsche Welle reports.

EP President Martin Schulz warned the new Greek government against changing the political course towards Russia. The politician said in an interview with the German TV channel ZDF on January 28 that he “noticed with dismay” that Athens abandoned the EU's joint position on strengthening sanctions against Russia. According to him, the new Greek government was not elected to boycott restrictions against Russia. He also noted that Greece had other problems.

Schulz admitted that he had “no desire to hold ideological debates with the government that has been in office for only days”. The EP President noted he didn't think that the ruling coalition consisting of leftists and right-wing populists was good for the country.

The Greek cabinet of ministers earlier criticised the EU's decision to extend sanctions against Russia. This stance of Alexis Tsipras's government caused discontent of Brussels.
