Vintsuk Viachorka: Lukashenka stirs up ethnic hatred

The dictator again publicly insulted the Belarusian language.

Vintsuk Viachorka, a politician, linguist and activist, said it commenting on Aliaksandr Lukashenka's statement at today's press conference in Minsk, Radio Svaboda reports.

“The head of state in fact again used his post to insult the Belarusian language,” he said. “He repeated the idea that the [Belarusian] language is not able to be used in certain disciplines, such as physics or philosophy. It's needless to say that such ideas are unscientific that they humiliate all people who love the Belarusian language and know its real wealth.

Lukashenka again recalled his favourite fairy tale about some Russians who allegedly were going to leave Belarus when 'nationalists' ruled in the early 1990s. He doesn't know the meaning of the word 'natsmen' (the Russian abbreviation for the ethnic minority). He apparently thinks it means national supermen, though this word is known since the time of Stalin, whom he adores. It means the ethnic minority. Perhaps, he wants to see Belarusians the ethnic minority.

No Russians were going to leave Belarus. This is not true. I need to say that this man uses his post to stir up ethnic and linguistic hatred.”

Lukashenka said today that there were no problems with the Belarusian and Russian languages in Belarus. “The issue regarding the Belarusian language was resolved once and for all at the Belarusian referendum. The two national languages in the country are Belarusian and Russian. This is how it will be as long as I am the president,” the dictator said.

“I do not ban anything. I will not press on people. The Belarusian language can be promoted in another way – speak Belarusian at home,” Lukashenka added.
