Head Of Lithuanian Foreign Ministry: No Secret Deals With Belarus Over Astravets NPP
Linas Linkevicius

Russian mass media are writing that the Lithuanian government had secretly agreed with Belarus on the nuclear power plant’s conformity with the Espoo convention.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius flatly denies allegations of Russian mass media that the Lithuanian government had allegedly secretly agreed with Belarusians that Astravets nuclear power plant project had been agreed with Lithuania, as it is required by the UN Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (the Espoo Convention), ru.Delfi.lt informs.

“We have become used to all sorts of rumours, and in this case I am surprised incredibly. The things absolutely contrary to reality are stated. A canard is a bird that is too beautiful to call this information of Russian mass media by its name. It’s totally absurd to say that Lithuania could enter any secret agreements,” – said the head of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in an interview to the Lithuanian daily Lietuvos Žinios.

Russian mass media write that the Lithuanian government had secretly agreed with Belarusians that the draft of Astravets NPP had been coordinated with Lithuania, as demanded by the Espoo Convention.

Besides, according to Russian mass media, the Lithuanian government plants to reinforce electric transmission lines going to Belarus, and it is planned to buy electricity from Astravets NPP via these lines, and sell it in transit to Sweden and Poland.
