Andrei Kurejchyk: It’s Humiliating To Receive Authorization For Film
ANDREI KUREJCHYCK

From next year the professional activities of independent filmmakers in Belarus can be put under threat.

According to the Constitution of Belarus, a person has a right for freedom to carry out professional activities. But from next year the professional activities of independent filmmakers could become at risk, Belsat informs.

“It is easier for me to go to Smolensk, Vilnius, Białystok, than to suffer from bureaucrats here and to explain them, as they do not give money to me, why I should ask permission from them and pay for that,” – Andrei Kurejchyk is fuming.

A draft decree of Lukashenka got leaked into the web. The decree is to bind everyone who produces a film independently to receive a certificate first, or on fact a permission to shoot. And consequently, to produce a film without it would be illegal.

“Personally I am not going to receive any authorizations, as I find it humiliating for an artist, for an official to read my film script and say whether I can produce a film or not,”Andrei Kurejchuk explains.

According to the filmmaker, this document can considerably decrease the number of independent films made in Belarus.
