Russia Halts Coal Supply to Ukraine

Russia suspended on Wednesday, November 24, its coal shipments to Ukraine, the Kommersant newspaper reported referring to an informed source.

"The customs [officials] stopped at the border both the energy and the coking coal ordered by the Ukrainian consumers," the source in one of the coal companies has told Kommersant.

It is noted that this information was confirmed by the logistics operators. However, according to one of them, transit of coal via Ukraine remains undisrupted.

The report also quotes another source from the coal industry as saying it is too early to bind customs difficulties with the earlier statement by Aleksandr Novak, Russian Energy Minister [on the termination of deliveries of coal to Ukraine in response to the energy blockade of Crimea]. The source stressed that the level of bureaucracy has generally worsened on both sides of the border.

A source in the Russian government has assured that there were no directives on this measure; it was still under consideration. The press service of the Federal Customs Service said that "it had no information on the issue", while JSC Russian Railways assured that there were no restrictions on supplies to Ukraine.

As UNIAN reported earlier, two out of four power transmission pylons on the administrative border between mainland Ukraine and Russian-occupied Crimea, which were damaged by blasts in the early hours of November 20, were destroyed completely late Saturday, November 21.

On Tuesday, Alexander Novak said Russia may decide to terminate coal supplies to Ukraine in response to the energy blockade of Crimea.

Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich supported the initiative on retaliatory measures against Ukraine.

Late Wednesday, November 24, one of the damaged electricity pylons in Kherson region was restored.
