Yury Belenki: Belarusians Should Remember What Slutsk Heroes Had Been Fighting For

The Days of Heroes was marked in Slutsk, and also in Minsk, Vilnus, New York and Warsaw.

On November 27, 2920 military clashes between Belarusian military formations and the Red Army started. The Slutsk Uprising lasted until the end of December. First Belarusians attacked successfully, but finally the Soviet army managed to quell resistance, Belast reports.

On the occasion of the Day of Heroes, Alternativa activists handed out flags with Pahonia coat-of-arms. In Slutsk a meeting and a march, authorized by the district executive committee, were planned for November 28. The assembly point was Slutsk local history museum, at 14:30.

And on Sunday activists of the Conservative Christian Party Belarusian Popular Front Party are to make a bus tour to the towns and villages associated with the uprising. The deputy chairman of the Conservative Christian Democratic Party – the Belarusian Popular Front Yury Belenki reminded that in 1920 armed conflicts between the armies of the Belarusian People’s Republic and the forces of the Russian Federative Socialist Republic were taking place. Then Slutsk volunteer insurgents were fighting, and their number reached 10,000.

“These people understood perfectly well what would happen if Russian occupiers come to their land – it means death, devastation and nothing but sorrow. Today’s Belarusians should be reminded that, and also that things do not just happen, when Kurapaty and other mass burial sites emerged all across Belarus, and how many innocent victims, lives of the best Belarusians were killed by those invaders from the East. It is a simple truth that one’s independence must be preserved by all means. To defend our independent Belarus means to offer descendants prospects of the nation’s development, prospects for well-being, and to stop the aggressive Russian militarists, who want to set up their military bases, quarrel with countries all over the world, and brazenly interfere to unleash a new war. Belarusians should come to realize that,” – Belenki noted.
