Cameron: Britain to support new sanctions if Minsk agreements fail

The United Kingdom will continue its policy of ensuring unity in the European Union on sanctions against Russia if the parties fail to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said it during a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Sunday, according to the presidential press service.

The two sides discussed the situation in the Donbas after the announcement of the ceasefire from 0000, February 15.

Poroshenko said that a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire throughout the line of contact was necessary for the further withdrawal of heavy weapons.

The president of Ukraine also thanked Cameron for his personal support at the European Council meeting that took place in Brussels on February 12, and for the strong position of the UK in support of Ukraine, as reflected in the latest resolution of the Group of Seven, the report says.

Cameron assured Poroshenko that Ukraine could count on the support of Britain as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The parties also agreed on their close coordination of further steps to achieve a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Donbas, the report reads.
