Belarus's agricultural sector loses $360 million due to crisis in Russia

The Belarusian agricultural sector lost more than $360 million last year due to the devaluation of the Russian ruble.

Belarus exported meat products worth $1.1 billion last year, BelePAN learnt from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

The export of meat products in monetary terms declined 19.4% in comparison to 2013. The export of pork reduced 55.9% to $57 million, finished and canned meat products – 40.5% to $77 million, sausages – 32.3% to $177 million, beef – 15.6% to $531 million.

The main reason for the decreased export is the devaluation of the Russian ruble, which made agricultural companies lose more than 360 million dollars last year, according to the ministry.

In addition, exporters of agricultural products lost over $100 million due to the sanctions of Rosselkhoznadzor. Russia's agricultural watchdog has banned supplies from more than 20 Belarusian meat-packing and dairy plants since autumn, because it found dangerous microorganisms, antibiotics and the genome of the ASF virus in their products. Most sanctioned plants already resumed supplies to Russia.

The export of dairy products in monetary terms increased 1% to $2.3 billion. In particular, the export of cheese and quark rose 23.2% to $800 million, sour cream – 18.1% to $71 million, kefir – 17.7% to $25 million.
