Activists from Hrodna lose work

The Ministry of Transport revoked Siarhei and Mikalai Verameyenka’s licence on passenger transportation.

They lost the opportunity to earn their living in a way they did before. The formal ground was a fine that Siarhei Verameyenka received last year for errors in the route card, Viasna human rights centre reports.

The activist, however, thinks the reason was his public activity. He was detained and fined for distributing leaflets. His son, Mikalai Verameyenka, was detained by the police for the Stop Tax 2 campaign. His car was stopped, because it allegedly was on the list of stolen cars.

Siarhei Verameyenka wanted to run for a seat in the city council a year ago, but the Hrodna city election commission headed by Uladzimir Khliabich refused to accept his application. Verameyenka says he came to apply for registration 30 minutes before the end of work hours and saw a queue near the office. Verameyenka says he entered the office when it was two minutes to 19:00, but commission members refused to accept his documents. Verameyenka began to protest, but commission head Uladzimir Khliabich called the police.

Siarhei Verameyenka thinks the real reason for revoking the licence was his public activity.
