Ministry of Information issued warnings to two newspapers in Barysau

During a week and a half, the Ministry of Information of Belarus issued at least five warnings to non-state newspapers.

In all cases claims relate to little comments to output information - four newspapers used abbreviation RB instead of "Republic of Belarus", one newspaper placed information on circulation on a wrong page. The press service of Belarusian Association of Journalists informed charter97.org.

Publisher of socio-political weekly publication "Borisovskie Novosti" (Borisov news) and "Reklamnyj Borjomi" - private unitary production enterprise "Bukas Media Centre"- received two written warnings from the Ministry of Information.

Anatol Bukas, the founder and editor-in-chief, told about it.

The abbreviation "RB" instead of "Republic of Belarus" was the reason for the warning. A few days earlier Baranavichy Intex-Press and Hantsavitski chas got the same warning.

"One call from the Ministry would be enough for us to correct the abbreviation in case it really did not comply with the law. But the Ministry decided to make an official warning. Obviously, they try to demonstrate their power: look, we have you on the ropes", they commented on the situation in Intex-Press to the BAJ.

After receiving two warnings during the year, any registered mass media in Belarus can be closed by court. The Belarusian Association of Journalists relates warnings to the future presidential elections, when the media can once again be persecuted.
