Lukashenka’s visit paralyzed Vorsha (Photo)

An unannounced paschal visit of Alyaksandr Lukashenka to Vorsha paralyzed the life of the city with 150,000 dwellers for the whole day.

On Sunday morning central streets were blocked for public transport, only traffic police cars and special service men were back and forth. At every street crossing there were policemen in uniform and in mufti, they were not allowing cars leave yards. Trustworthy believers were grouped next to the church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God a few hours before the arrival of the dictator, Radio Svaboda informs.

When he arrived, Lukashenka didn’t go into long talks with people, he simply reminded that Belarus is a peaceful country, but in case someone would try to check that, “they are to be repelled in a decent way.” After that they placed candles with his youngest son Mikalai, and took part in the festive mass.

Many citizens had hoped that as it often happens, Lukashenka could go off the route and pay attention to the long-delayed construction site, which had been an eyesore to Vorsha dwellers for a few years already. Just next to the church building there is a 200 metres long bridge over the Dnieper, which had been closed because of its critical condition. About 5 years ago it literally started to fall apart, which made local authorities recognize it was in an emergency state. However, officials were not brave enough to show Lukashenka the process of the reconstruction.

Closing the bridge in the emergency state, the local top officials promised that it would be ready in two years. However the experience of other long-delayed construction sites give rise to doubts that it is possible. By Dazhynki festival -2008 citizens had been promised an Ice Palace, which has become the main element of the holiday of rural workers. The palace was finished with great difficulties and only after 5 years, in the last days of 2013.
