EU-Ukraine summit starts in Kyiv today

Kyiv is hosting EU-Ukraine summit Monday, April 27.

Censor.NET reports citing Radio Liberty.

It is expected that the negotiations will be primarily related to the Minsk cease-fire deal observation in the eastern Ukraine. Among other things, the EU-Ukraine summit will focus on implementation of the Association Agreement as well as the political and economic reforms in Ukraine, including issues of financial and other assistance from the EU.

At the summit in Kyiv, the European officials are likely to express their position on sending international peacekeeping force to Ukraine on the request of President Petro Poroshenko.

An unnamed EU official said AFP that Brussels has received such a request from Kyiv.

"We are studying these proposals in detail," the official said adding that the EU yet sees "any reason" to replace the OSCE monitoring mission.

The EU representative also said that the summit in Kyiv would focus on the reform of the Ukrainian economy. According to him, the EU Delegation will require constitutional amendments to be implemented in Ukraine which will be mainly aimed at the legislative definition of the status of the Donbas regions controlled by the pro-Russian separatists.

The EU-Ukraine summit will be the first such event since the overthrow of the regime of Viktor Yanukovych, and after the simultaneous ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the European Parliament on Sept. 16., 2014.
