Leu Marholin: Printing money will boost prices

The sowing campaign will start soon, and problems with the crisis at MAZ and MTZ plants have not been solved.

The Belarusian government has lifted the ban on increasing consumer prices. The restrictions were imposed on December 19, 2014, after the devaluation of the Belarusian ruble. Should we expect a price rise?

Economist Leu Marholin thinks prices will not fall, but won't grow significantly, Zavtra Tvoei Strany reports.

“We don't have reserves for an increase in prices. People don't have money to buy goods, cheap categories of goods become more popular. There's no proposal if there's no demand,” the expert says.

The economist draws attention to meat prices. He says a kilogram of good sausages cost 60,000-70,000 earlier, but today you can buy chicken sausages with vegetable additives at the same price.

“People don't have money to buy sausages for more than 70,000 rubles, but shops cannot set lower prices. So, they will focus on cheaper products,” the economist says.

He thinks there are no conditions for further price growth, but he doesn't rule out the possibility of a jump in prices in the near future.

“The sowing campaign starts soon. Problems with the crisis at MAZ and MTZ plants haven't been solved. So, the government may print more money, which will boost prices,” Leu Marholin forecasts.
