Maksim Viniarski fined, Volha Nikalaichyk detained
Volha Nikalaichyk

Maksim Viniarski, a coordinator of European Belarus civil campaign, was tried in the Smaliavichy district court on May 21.

He was charged with insulting a police officer (article 23.5 of the Code of Administrative Offences).

Judge Lina Barodzich issued the activist a fine of 30 basic amounts, European Belarus activist Yulia Stsiapanava wrote on Facebook.

According to a police report made against Viniarski on May 15, he called police officer Lesitsa a “vampire”. The incident happened when Viniarski and other activists came to the police department in Smaliavichy to meet their colleague Leanid Kulakou, who was released from a detention centre.

Stsiapanava says film director Volha Nikalaichyk, who came to support Viniarski at the trial, was detained by deputy head of the Smaliavichy police department.

Activist Leanid Kulakou thinks Nikalaichyk was detained for a picket on the Mound of Glory ahead of the visit of Night Wolves biker gang to Belarus.
