Deputy of Verkhovna Rada Igor Guz: Lukashenka is ready to surrender all positions to Kremlin

Official Minsk is not a partner for Ukraine in its struggle for a European choice and independence from Moscow.

Igor Guz, Deputy of People's Front and Deputy Chairman on Foreign Affairs, told in his interview with charter97.org.

- At the summit in Riga Belarusian delegation denied to sign a final memorandum because of paragraph condemning Russia's annexation of Crimea. Earlier, at the Trade Unions' meeting Lukashenka accused participants of anti-Russian statements. How will it affect relations between official Minsk and Kyiv?

–There is nothing surprising in such Lukashenka's behavior. For a long time he has been maneuvering between Kremlin and the West and trying to bargain preferences. He is a person with no clear position, he does not inspire confidence. Unfortunately, Belarus is not a strategic partner of Ukraine in our struggle for independence because the Belarusian government can surrender all positions to Kremlin. First, it refers to boundaries between Belarus and Ukraine. Any moment they can become unprotected. The summit in Riga is of great importance for Kyiv. It shows who is our friend and whether it contributes to changes. Unfortunately, we see that Belarus does not help us.

- Where should Ukraine look for allies in Belarus?

–It is a very complex issue. It is clear the official authorities of Ukraine will continue their attempts for a dialogue with Lukashenka, although there are no guarantees of his support. Belarus is unfortunately a non-democratic country. Therefore, as in other countries it is difficult to find here support in alternative political forces if the government does not support us.

I think, our president and the prime minister will try to work directly with Lukashenka and fear to make tough statements on human rights in Belarus and an opposition support. There are some deputies in the Verkhovna Rada – and I am among them - who understand the problem of dictatorial regime in Belarus. We are against Lukashenka, we consider him the dictator who takes the wrong way. There are only few of us, but we will try to change something.
