Suspension of driver's licence for failure to pay bank loans in Mahilou region

Residents of the Mahilou region who cannot pay their foreign currency loans face unusual sanctions.

Radio Mahilou learnt it from the enforcement division of the main justice department of the Mahilou region executive committee.

Other sanctions against individuals who own money to banks include a ban on leaving Belarus and suspension of driver's or small watercraft licences. But the most popular measure is the arrest of a debtor's property – summer houses, flats and vehicles.

The process of collecting debts is slow, because many debtors do not own any property and have incomes officially. Nevertheless, 450,000 dollars were collected in 2014 from the individuals who have foreign currency loans. About 600 enforcement proceedings of a total sum of more than 300,000 euros and 4.5 million dollars were initiated against residents of the Mahilou region in 2014.
