Pavel Daneika: MAZ to be closed down in near future

Trends of the recent years show that Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) does not have a place in the market.

Pavel Daneika, the director of IPM business school, said it in an interview with Zavtra Tvoey Strany.

“Certain economic sectors are getting out of date, moving to other manufacturers or other countries. One shouldn't be afraid of giving up ineffective production facilities,” Daneika thinks. “To figure it out, an analysis of effectiveness of sectors and companies is needed. What concerns large companies, MAZ is likely to have big problems. This company will probably be liquidated.”

“Its trucks used to be among the cheapest trucks of acceptable quality. But trends of the recent years show that MAZ doesn't have a place in the market: the company doesn't have a value offer interesting for a certain group of clients,” the expert is confident.

“Only the analysis can show which companies have chances to survive and which don't. It's better to carry it out right now, because all have found themselves in difficult conditions in crisis. For some it is the disease that will be cured if a company or a sector is supported in a difficult situation. Some already died but don't know about it. 'Treating' dead companies makes no sense,” Daneika is convinced.

The economist thinks it is time to build economic policy for the entire economy, including the private sector.

“We will see who is worth supporting and who is not. It will also stimulate the creation of the infrastructure to support exports and to lay the foundation for structural reforms. The development of exports now is reduced to supporting big state-owned plants. The private sector, with the growing share in GDP, remains almost without support,” Daneika thinks.
