Picket in Homel: “Elections out of question, when corruption is thriving”

Picket in Homel: “Elections out of question, when corruption is thriving”
Kanstantsin Zhukouski

Participants of a picket and journalists have been detained in Homel. Freelance journalists Kanstantsin Zhukouski and Natallya Kryvashej were detained near the building of the Central police department at 2 p. m., BelaPAN reports.

Journalists were making a video footage of a plate on the building of the Central police department, and in this moment they were detained. “We were grabbed by hands, they used four-letter words, uttered threats, they took us to the police department and drew up a report, though it is still not clear what charges are. We were detained absolutely illegally. I think it is connected to the upcoming elections and crackdown on journalists related to that,” he said.

As it turned out, in the police department of the Central district two dwellers of Homel, a doctor Yauhen Hodar and his wife Aza Hodar, detained for an attempt to hold a picket, are kept as well. For several years the spouses have had legal proceedings related to problems of housing cooperative where they had been building a flat. On July 29 they tried to hold a picket in order to attract attention to the problems, in particular corruption-related ones.

“Me and my wife stood with a poster with the words: “What sort of elections is possible, when corruption is thriving?” and the Constitution in our hands. Immediately after we unfurled the poster, we were detained by policemen and taken to the Central police department. Now reports are being drawn up against us,” Yauhen Hodar said.

Journalists Kanstantsin Zhukouski and Natallya Kryvashej were filming the attempt to hold a picket by the Hodar family.
