Mikalai Statkevich: This is the end, elections are over

The former political prisoner thinks the “presidential elections” in Belarus cannot be recognised even today.

“There's an opinion that people began to fear changes amid events in Ukraine,” gazetaby.com spoke to the politician.

“I think opposition must struggle for democracy in any case. During the latest elections, we didn't choose a single candidate, but we set tasks. We now need to achieve the minimum task – to put pressure on the authorities, inflicting political, moral and psychological damage to make them hold real elections,” Mikalai Statkevich said.

“I do not understand fear of protests in the Square. Our Square is not Maidan. It is not a fight but peaceful resistance. If the authorities beat citizens, they hurt themselves morally and politically.

We have the right to peaceful protests. We should express our attitude towards these brazen frauds. Earlier they allowed at least one opposition candidate to run in elections, but we don't have this opportunity now!

My initiative team was not registered, which is illegal. I think my rights and the rights of the people who nominated me are violated. I think the elections are invalid. I will struggle to cancel them. Otherwise any form of participation in them makes no sense. The people who are being used are, perhaps, good and decent (as it happens in most cases). But the list of candidates is already fabricated. This is the end, the elections are over.

I will demand the return of the elections at least to the first stage and my registration as a candidate. I know how to drive the country out of the current situation, I have support in society and I declare that I will struggle for my right."
