Zmitser Bandarenka: Demanding new elections is strong move by Mikalai Statkevich

Free honest elections under international control can help the country tackle the crisis.

Mikalai Statkevich, a former political prisoner and 2010 presidential candidate, said today that the Belarusian authorities “fabricated the list of candidates before the start of the presidential race, so the election campaign must be re-launched”.

Zmitser Bandarenka, a former political prisoner, coordinator of European Belarus civil campaign, head of Andrei Sannikov's team in the 2010 elections, comments on the statement in an interview with charter97.org.

– How can you comment on Mikalai Statkevich's statement about a new election campaign in Belarus?

– I think it is a very strong move by Mikalai Statkevich. Only free elections can solve the problems that Belarus and the people of Belarus have faced.

Free honest elections under international control can help the country tackle the political, economic and moral crisis, to which it was led by Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

Lukashenka says about mass support. So, let him organise free honest elections in today's conditions, when the civilised world is ready to change its attitude towards Belarus. Otherwise he will fail to keep his power amid economic collapse.

If he doesn't do it, we will have to boycott the election farce and launch a civil disobedience campaign.

I think the EU, the US and Belarus's neighbours can support the idea of holding new free elections in Belarus with Mikalai Statkevich and other opposition candidates.
