Niakliaeu and Statkevich refuse to go to court for rally on Freedom Square

Minsk's Tsentralny district court is to hear the case in connection with the rally on Freedom Square in Minsk on September 23.

The rally was carried out by former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, who wanted to organise a meeting of voters with Lukashenka.

The gathering, which attracted from 400 to 500 people, was attended by former presidential candidate Uladzimir Niakliaeu, Nasha Niva reports.

The leaders – Mikalai Statkevich, Anatol Liabedzka and Uladzimir Niakliaeu – focused in their speeches on the refusal to participate in the electoral farce and on repression, and spoke against the presence of Russian troops in Belarus. They invited people to come to a rally on October 4, which will be held against Russian military bases in Belarus.

Niakliaeu appeared near the court today but refused to enter the building.

“Why go to court if we have neither justice nor elections in the country,” he said and left.

Liabedzka entered the court building. He is now waiting for the hearing. Statkevich didn't come. Liabedzka says Statkevich refuses to come because he hasn't received a summons in the proper way.

Statkevich was fined 7.2 million rubles for a gathering with voters near GUM store on September 10.
