Minsk Hosted Evening In Pavel Sheremet’s Memory

On November 28, dozens of people gathered in Minsk to honor the memory of famous Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet, killed in Kiev.

On November 28, Pavel Sheremet would have turned 45 years old, he died a little shy of his small jubilee.

On July 20, the car, in which the journalist was driving to work, was blown up in the center of the Ukrainian capital. On Saturday a few dozen people gathered in Minsk to remember what kind of man Sheremet was and how much he managed to do for his profession.

Host of the evening, journalist Yury Karmanau said that Pavel was ironic, light and very easy-going, he asked the colleagues to remember him kindly and with good cheer, Deutsche Welle reports.

According to Karmanau, said that it is difficult to realize today how many things Sheremet managed to do during his career: he was the editor in chief of Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta, worked at the Public Russian Television as the PRT special projects department head, and work on radio as a "Radio News" presenter in Kiev. In 2005 Sheremet created the site "Belarusian Partisan". In addition, he met a lot with students – future journalists, wrote textbooks for them. And he did all that with great pleasure.

Sheremet’s mother Liudzmila noted that her son "lived his short life in a very bright, very light way, and that light will remain and light up a lot of hearts."

"There are a lot of talented young people, brave and strong people in Belarus, I can see them in the hall now and I wish you health, happiness, and, as a mother, I want to wish young people especially: take care of your life," – Liudmila Sheremet said.

Journalist Sviatlana Kalinkina, who wrote together with Pavel a book about the permanent head of Belarus "An Accidental President", noticed that Sheremet personally organized visits of independent Russian journalists to Belarus during the most important electoral campaigns. "Many of you will hear for the first time now that Paul helped orphanages and brought medicines, clothes. He took across probably a ton of opposition literature, banned in Belarus, bringing it every time he came here," – Kalinkina said.

Rock In Memory Of Sheremet

Former and current leaders of the Belarusian Association of Journalists Zhanna Litvina and Andrei Bastunets, director Leanid Mindlin, kidnapped in 2000 PRT cameraman Dzmitry Zavadski’s wife, Sheremet’s colleagues and many others spoke well of Sheremet.

The audience watched historical records with Sheremet’s interviews. Frontman of the popular Belarusian rock band "J: Mors" Uladzimir Puhach dedicated several compositions to the memory of the deceased journalist.
