Stanislay Shushkevich

The first head of independent Belarus has decided to dismiss the Belarusian Social Democratic Assembly.

"The thing is, we cannot afford rental of premises,Stanislay Shushkevich explained to journalists. – And there is no one to collect contributions from. People lose their jobs, earn less. And we are doing our bests to pay timely. And at some point we realized that we cannot longer afford this. This is the harsh truth of life."

However, those who stick to social-democratic values will be able to continue their activities in a slightly different format, shushkevich told. They plan to create an organizing committee for a new party that can act without office.

"Our legislation for that matter is very mean, – the head of the BSDA said. – If there is a party, then you should pay. A party must have at least six official premises all of which are rented at commercial price! We have as many as seven premises and we have to pay 100-130 dollars for each of them monthly. Now multiply – it's quite a significant sum of money! And also add utility bills which significantly increase in the winter ... In short, we have no money."
