Aliaksandr Ryhoravich, Resign Now, or It May Be Late
Mikhail Kadyrov

An open letter to Belarusian ruler Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

Aliaksandr Ryhoravich!

A lot of people across the country including me believe that it is an extremely dangerous utopia to expect that you are still able to resolve complex problems mostly generated by you, by the way. Now people say: "Lukashenka is our main problem which should be tackled with!"

It does not need any evidence, this is a self-evident fact. It needs no reasoning and it raises concern for people who have suffered a lot.

A round peg in a square hole is the most precise and brief definition of you as the current president of Belarus.

You've obviously become a deterrent which does not allow the country moving forward.

Over 22 years under your leadership Belarus has gained only social structure which means simple authoritarianism with explicit elements of dictatorship. Of course, there are no prospects.

The economy faces crisis, pre-collapse state. The need to reform has long overdue.

The majority of people is intimidated, passive with low cultural and even material level of claims.

In the strict sense there is no elite. The vertical power is an instrument in your hands.

National culture, language, national identity are almost completely destroyed. In fact, the main force which could unite the nation is ruined.

In fact, mass media perform propaganda function to ensure the so-called Belarusian stability, i.e. a reckless satisfaction by electorate with quality of life, information environment and other conditions. And, unfortunately, people can easily be subject to manipulation, stultification and, finally, adoption of the “simple life”.

Law enforcement bodies mostly perform as a political police which ensure safety of your power. And you have, unfortunately, succeeded here.

Science, culture, education, medical, social and legal protection of citizens, ethics, morality, spirituality — they all highly correspond to unsatisfactory and poor state of modern Belarus and pose a real threat to its further progressive development and appearance as a sovereign State.

I'd like to voice possible ways out of this complex and mostly unpredictable situation.

It may happen that there are rational and responsible people in the system who realize all the tragedy of the current situation, who have concern about the country's future and can consolidate and peacefully launch inevitable changes with no blood and revenge. They will rely on all moral and intellectual forces which have been maintained among some representatives of the vertical power and among representatives in business, science and Belarusians abroad. I think this is the most desirable option, the least "shocking". You should let it happen.

It may happen that Russia will finally realize that amid possible new geopolitical realities it is much more profitable for it to have democratic, market-oriented, economically prosperous, distinctive Belarus with the people brotherly loving Russians and Russia.

Such relationships would be much more advantageous and reliable than, for example, its current relations with Finland. Belarus should promote such relations by any means, impose and encourage them.

It is likely that further economic, social and moral decay maintains under your current power and constant tightening of screws. In fact, the "North Korea" option will be launched, however, it may be less odious. Unfortunately, Belarus has all prerequisites for it. And it can last long.

It may happen that the economic and social collapse will occur much faster, just in a year or two. In my opinion, its likelihood exceeds 65%. What next, I wonder? I guess, this holds out little hope. It may take another circle.

It may happen that some reasons can make

you voluntarily resign from power in the near future, three-five months later. I think your specialists have already analyzed and prepared such a variant.

Aliaksandr Ryhoravich, you should know that the key civic duty of every Belarusian now is to tell the truth about events in the country, what it can result in, create education, form a new worldview and spiritual dimension. And there are a lot of them. This tendency is unstoppable now.

Over 22 years dominant state-owned media have persistently, blatantly, shamelessly and strongly drummed into people's heads that everything in the country has been done by your order and everything has been under your control...food, heat, clothes, shoes, science, education, birth and child care, medicine, sports ...

And you doubtlessly traveled across the country, appeared on TV: tried food, gave children a pat on the back, felt flax fiber, milled wheat ears in hands (how many times he did it), told with enthusiasm how to make food, stood at parades, endlessly and roughly "went negative on" officials, and talked up a storm that often made people laugh. It is a PR crap.

But fortunately, the vast majority of the people now rates your words at their true value. There are only few desperate fellows left and their number is getting lower every day.

Sometimes I wonder whether you really feel comfortable and do not have a nasty taste in the mouth from these so-called visits. How it is possible to imitate, fudge the truth for so long. You might have a good health.

Aliaksandr Ryhoravich! Please, do not cling to power, until you are blue in the face. Walk away tall. You have Boris Yeltsin as an example. His rating equaled to 3% when he resigned. The Belarusian people will accept your decision with respect, part of them even with regret. There can be no such chance for it next year. Mark my words.

You have recently said words of wisdom: "Listen, I've been the president for more than 20 years. What should I need more? I should bethink myself of place to have a rest. I'm just a man who is tired of this. I'm looking for a place to sit down quietly and relax...

I've worked a lot on this position and like any ordinary person I'd like to spend more time with my children, wake up in the morning without thinking about problems..."

He talks to the point! You do understand it! What does not let you resign from the position?
