Lithuania remains seriously concerned about the danger that the Astravets NPP could bring to Lithuania and its EU neighbors.

Prime-Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius has stated this in a press-release got by charter97.org, paying particular attention to the consequences of the catastrophe that happened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant 30 years ago.

“Lithuania remains seriously concerned about the situation in the sphere of security of Lithuania and its EU neighbors. Belarus should guarantee that the safety of the NPP, which is under construction only some 50 kilometers from Vilnius, will be provided in strict compliance with all international requirements and recommendations on nature protection and nuclear security”, Algirdas Butkevičius has noted.

According to him, the lessons of the Chernobyl catastrophe and other nuclear disasters oblige us to develop nuclear technologies following the highest international standards of nuclear security and protection.

Previously, Butkevičius stated that Lithuania would not buy electric power from Astravets NPP.
