Belarus will not extradite ex-president Kurmanbek Bakiyev to the Kyrgyz authorities, the representative of the Belarusian prosecutor's office stated.

“Kurmanbek Bakiyev is a citizen of Belarus. Belarus does not extradite its citizens to other countries, which is a common international practice. The Kyrgyz side previously sent similar requests to our country. They have been considered and not acceded,” – gazeta.kg quoted the representative of the prosecutor's office.

As earlier reported, at the meeting of consular services heads of the two countries in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan once again raised the issue of extradition of ex-president Bakiyev and his confidants, who had been convicted for serious crimes back at home, and who are living in Belarus now.

We remind that the court sentenced former president of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiyev and his brother Janish Bakiyev Kyrgyz to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Bakiyev's brother – Kanybek Bakiyev is accused of illegal land allocation. His case is being under consideration of the Jalal-Abad regional court.

On April 7, 2010, several thousand opposition supporters seized the Government House in Bishkek, forcing President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to flee to the south of Kyrgyzstan. At the attempt to seize the building, the security opened fire with intend to kill. On April 7, the total number of victims was 87 people, more than 400 were injured. Bakiyev resigned a week after the overthrow.
